Sources
The Painting Code is built on open knowledge. These are the sources behind every painting, fact and story in the app and on this site.
Painting images
All 500 painting images are public-domain works obtained from Wikimedia Commons. Faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public-domain artworks are themselves public domain (PD-Art); a few files are released under CC0. The color codes, mosaics and soft-focus clues are derived from those images. The license of each file is listed below with a link to its Commons page.
Brand artwork
The decorative hero and sharing images are AI-generated artistic reinterpretations of Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, created with OpenAI ImageGen. The original public-domain painting is used as a visual reference. Gameplay clues, painting stories and collection images use the original artworks.
Facts
Artists, dates, media, movements, sizes and museums come from Wikidata, available under CC0 1.0.
Descriptions
Short descriptions are the introductions of the corresponding Wikipedia articles, used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License. Each painting below links to its source article, where the full list of authors can be found in the page history.
Fonts
Barlow Condensed, DM Sans and Space Mono are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and are served from this site.
No affiliation
The Painting Code is an independent game by Cyril.page. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia, Wikidata or any museum named here. Museum names identify where each painting is held.
